On the afternoon of September 4, 2024, Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and his delegation investigated and assessed the Institute of Biomedical Intersection, listened to the work report of the leadership team of the Institute, and sorted out the achievements and problems since the cooperation between the two sides, and put forward specific suggestions on the deepening of cooperation.

The meeting was chaired by Academician Wang Xiaodong, President of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, and attended by Academician Shao Feng and other relevant functional department comrades. Academician Wang Xiaodong firstly expressed his welcome to Vice President Wang Hongwei and his delegation, and introduced the development history of the Institute of Biomedical Intersection in the past five years.

Under the cordial care of then-President Qiu Yong, the Biomedical Intersection Institute was established in 2018. Thanks to the multifaceted support provided by all relevant departments of the university, as well as the unique research system and culture of the Institute, Biomedical Intersection Institute has made remarkable achievements in the past five years, and is in the international first-class and domestic leading position in a number of assessment indexes (world relative influence, percentage of articles published in CNS, average number of citations per article in CNS, and disciplinary normative citation influence, etc.). It has won a number of international scientific awards such as the William Coley Award, King Faisal Prize for Science, Baruch Bloomberg Prize, etc., and many people have won domestic awards and talent funding programs such as the Future Science Award, the New Cornerstone Fellowship Program, and the Science Exploration Award, etc., and it has incubated seven biomedical enterprises, and a number of medicines have entered the stage of clinical trials.

In the next ten years, the Biomedical Cross-Institute will make full use of the school's advantages in terms of student population, cross-fertilize with other disciplines at Tsinghua University, and utilize new technological means such as artificial intelligence to create a new paradigm in life science research.

Vice President Wang Hongwei fully affirmed the achievements of the Institute of Biomedical Intersection in scientific research exploration, talent cultivation, institutional mechanism, results transformation, and disciplinary intersection, etc. He pointed out that the Institute of Biomedical Intersection maintains a culture and tradition of continuous innovation, equality and freedom, and has formed a very good scientific research atmosphere, does not pay attention to “hats”, and encourages young talents to be open-minded. He pointed out that BMI has maintained a culture and tradition of continuous innovation, equality and freedom, formed a very good scientific research atmosphere, not focusing on “hats” and encouraging young talents to focus on long-term goals without any distractions, and achieved a number of world-leading original scientific research results. The experience and practice of BMI are worthy of reference for other departments of the university, and we look forward to the opening of the unique courses of BMI in the spring semester of next year. It is hoped that the Institute of Biomedical Interdisciplinary Research will combine its own institutional advantages, strengthen in-depth exchanges and cooperation with various departments and platforms of Tsinghua University, explore cross-disciplinary construction and talent cultivation, and make significant contributions to the realization of Tsinghua University's strategic goal of entering the forefront of the world's first-class universities in terms of the overall academic level by 2030.
