On 29th July, at the "Symposium of Capital Science and Technology Workers in Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Beijing Municipal Association for Science and Technology", Academician Shao Feng of TIMBR/NIBS was awarded the title of "Beijing Advanced Science and Technology Worker" for the first batch.

Academician Shao Feng has made a series of important original discoveries in the field of virulence mechanism of pathogenic bacteria and anti-bacterial natural immunity. He has successively identified the intracellular natural immunity receptors of several important bacterial molecules, such as endotoxin, flagellum, type III secretion system, etc. He has elucidated the molecular mechanism of its downstream inflammatory caspases inducing cellular pyroptosis and perforation of the membrane by the GSDM family proteins, and has found that cellular pyroptosis can induce anti-tumor immune activity, which has provided a new idea and theoretical foundation for the treatment of sepsis and the research and development of anti-tumor drugs and vaccines.

Academician Shao Feng has been awarded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Young Scientist Award, the International Protein Society Young Scientist Award, the Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Prize in Basic Medicine, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Gold Medal, the Future Science Award, and the William F. Coley Prize, etc. He was elected as a foreign member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2015, and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in December of the same year, and in June 2019 He was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in December 2015, and elected as an Academician of the German National Academy of Sciences (GAS) in June 2019, and was selected as one of the first New Cornerstone Fellows in 2023.

The selection of Beijing Advanced Science and Technology Workers is aimed at recognizing outstanding science and technology workers with patriotic dedication, outstanding achievements and contributions in the economic and social development of the capital city, and to inspire the majority of science and technology workers in the capital city to innovate and strive for excellence. The scope of the selection is in the city in various industries and fields of production, teaching, scientific research, popularization of science and other front-line work. For the capital's economic and social development of high-quality achievements and outstanding contributions to the work of the various types of outstanding scientific and technological workers, the selection quota is no more than 30. The award is hosted by the Beijing Municipal Government and organized by the Beijing Municipal Association for Science and Technology, and is selected once every three years.
